Washington High School
Massillon, Ohio

Started in 1970, the tradition of having a live tiger at the football games has been a cherished addition to the pageantry here. For many years, their caretakers were the Wilbur Arnold (‘48) and Ed Annen families and of late, for many years, Bob (’54) and Elizabeth Weisgarber (’57) Hollender have looked after Massillon’s number one pet.

For the last several years it has become a legally difficult and cumbersome task to continue, not to mention costly as our tiger tradition came under the attack of animal rights activists. At this year’s rivalry game with Canton which we celebrated the 50th anniversary of this tradition it was announced that the tradition of procuring a live tiger will be retired.
