  • Fifth and sixth grade teacher, Tallmadge City Schools - 1963-1966
  • University of Miami professor of elementary education and reading specialization for undergraduate and graduate students - 1969-2008
  • Published twelve books for education majors and inservice teachers including four editions of Teaching Content Area Reading Skills - co-authored with Dr. Charles Mangrum - used in more than 100 universities
  • Authored practical books for elementary teachers, including The Reading Corner, Phorgan's Phonics, and Read All About It
  • Published Help Your Child Learn to Read, which was recommended by the American Library Association
  • Presented professional papers in USA and Brisbane, Australia


  • Member in honorary fraternities, including Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa, and Omicron Delta Kappa
  • Received the highest award attainable at the University of Miami (Iron Arrow), based on character, leadership, and scholarship
  • UM Professor of the Year in 1983, 1996, and 2001
  • Honored by the Faculty Senate of UM for extraordinary service during 39 years to the University of Miami and the Miami-Dade community

Community Involvement

  • Consultant in Florida and Georgia for the School Desegregation Center
  • Instructed teachers in teaching literacy skills in Nassau, Freeport, Nevis, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and the Cayman Islands to earn bachelors and masters degrees in education
  • Taught and supervised former teachers from Cuba and Haiti as they earned teacher certification in Florida
  • Christian Education Coordinator and College Student Ministry in local churches
  • Associate Master in Mahoney Residential College - 1997-2004
