Greetings Fellow WHS Alumni and Friends,
It has been an exciting 6 months since I introduced myself as the current president of the WHS Alumni Association. I know I speak for the WHSAA Board when I say we are immensely proud of the 2023 Massillon Tigers and their Division II State Championship Win! It was a heart stopping game and I personally was overcome with emotion as I watched Tiger history being made that night in the stands. Congratulations to the team, coaches, cheerleaders, and the Massillon Tiger Swing Band. It was a long and challenging season for all involved and their collective hard work and dedication paid off!
As I stated in the Fall newsletter, the Trustees and I have been working on many initiatives to improve WHSAA operations and communication. One of the biggest areas to tackle has been the revision of the WHSAA website. In the coming months you will begin to see changes to our website look, navigation, access to helpful forms and updated articles. Our goal is to develop a site that will be engaging, easy to navigate and provide users with current information on WHSAA activities and news. Website revision/development is a huge undertaking so please be patient with us as we work to improve our site.
We have developed a new system for onboarding new WHSAA Board members and will be voting on new members in May. Our application process has been helpful in recruiting and learning more about potential board members. If you are interested in becoming a WHSAA Trustee, please contact our office within the next month. Nominations for the board will be presented at our April meeting.
In other news there will be 15 WHS classes holding reunions in 2024. One class will be holding a birthday party. If you are interested in learning more about your class reunion or if you would like to update your address to receive information, please contact our office.
Additionally, WHSAA held a very successful fundraising event on February 19th at BW3s Wild Wings in Massillon. A special thanks to all who planned, donated raffle baskets and gift certificates, and attended this event. All proceeds from this event will be used toward operation expenses. By now you may have seen WHSAA license plates around town and wondered, where can I get one of those? Well, we still have some available for $25.00. They make excellent gifts for new grads, and tiger fans! Please contact our office if you are interested in purchasing an Alumni license plate.
I will close with a heartfelt congratulations to the 2024 Class of WHS Distinguished Citizens being honored on April 12th at St. George Cultural Center.
- Craig S. Keener, Class of 1978
- George T. Maier, Class of 1978
- Kevin Miller, Class of 1995
- Rick Spielman, Class of 1982
The WHSAA Distinguished Citizen Committee works tirelessly to make this yearly event special for the inductees, their family, and friends. Please contact our office if you would like to learn more about this event, contribute to the Washington High School Scholarship Fund or become a member of the WHS Alumni Association.
Go Tigers!
Nancy McComas Jobe, ('81)
